Botanic name: dalbergia latifolia Origin: East India Other names: Palisander, palosanto de India
Density: 650-850 kg/m3 40-53 lbs/ft3
Uses: Backs and sides, bridges, headplates, fingerboards Indian rosewood is a substitute for Brazilian rosewood. It is a lot lighter, not so dense, but more stable. The colours range from red to light brown with golden streaks, but often the colours are various shades of purple, which eventually oxidise to a brown colour.
The quality depends on the narrowness of the grain, colour and uniformity. For example, a first quality set will have a narrow and uniform grain, and an intense purple colour; with our second quality set the grain is slightly more separated and the colour is not quite as intense.
